Objective: This study aims to examine women’s issues and their representation in Maryam Hosseinian’s novel Banoo Gozan. Its primary focus is an analysis of the novel based on Elaine Showalter’s four feminist approaches: the biological, cultural, psychoanalytic, and linguistic approaches.
Method: The present research adopts a descriptive-analytical method. In this study, the prominent intellectual and thematic dimensions of Banoo Gozan are examined and analyzed within the framework of feminist theory, with particular emphasis on Elaine Showalter’s four proposed approaches.
Results: The findings of the study reveal that the content of the novel is compatible with all four of Showalter’s feminist approaches. Among them, the psychoanalytic approach appears more frequently than the others, largely due to the psychological fantasy embodied in the character of Tata. The analysis also shows that, because of her disordered and painful past, Tata is overwhelmed by feelings of anger, revenge, and loneliness. Moreover, the pressures imposed by a patriarchal society and its restrictions have led to the destruction of her personal aspirations and the loss of her identity.
Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that Banoo Gozan is a noteworthy work in the representation of women’s issues. Through her awareness of women’s rights and her literary skill, the author has successfully highlighted these concerns and has effectively articulated women’s experiences within the narrative. In addition, the novel can be regarded as a critical reflection on the destructive consequences of patriarchal structures for women’s psychological and social lives. It also demonstrates the capacity of contemporary fiction to serve as a powerful medium for expressing feminine identity and resistance.
