Objective: The process of religious education is based on four pillars: the educator, the learner (educatee), educational content, and context. Depending on the emphasis placed on either the educator or the learner, the pedagogical approach is categorized as either "educator-centered" or "learner-centered." This study aims to delineate the position and role of the learner (the "self") within the process of religious education and to examine how this role influences the prevention of social harms among youth.
Method: Employing a descriptive-analytical research method, this study seeks to address the fundamental question of how the role of the "learner’s self" (the youth) is conceptualized within the framework of religious education, and what function this role serves in addressing social harms.
Results: The findings indicate that within the model of religious education, the most pivotal role is held by the learner themselves, who achieves immunity against social harms through self-control and the strengthening of taqwa (piety). Furthermore, the key indicators of a learner-centered approach were identified as: an emphasis on the learner’s freedom and agency, a focus on responsibility and duty-orientation, the cultivation of critical thinking and contemplation, and the strategic use of admonition and encouragement.
Conclusion: Enhancing self-control for the prevention of social harms among youth requires strengthening socialization, promoting the religious culture of silat al-rahm (maintaining kinship ties), and reinforcing the internal regulation of the faculties of lust and anger. By implementing these strategies, youth can translate religious teachings from abstract concepts into practical actions, thereby becoming more resilient against moral and social challenges through self-restraint. Ultimately, by shifting the focus from external pressures to the internal empowerment of the learner, this approach creates a framework in which the individual not only distances themselves from social harms but also becomes an active agent in preserving the psychological and moral health of society.
