Research Objective: The main objective of this research is to examine and analyze the three central concepts of love, anxiety, and presence in Gabriel Marcel’s existential philosophy. This article seeks to show how these three elements form the core of human experience and how, through their combination, a deeper understanding of the meaning of life, liberation from isolation, and achievement of authenticity and existential fulfillment can be achieved.
Research Method: The method of this research is philosophical analysis and descriptive-analytical method. The required data were collected through library study and examination of Gabriel Marcel’s original works (such as “Being and Being”, “Mysteries of Being” and his other writings) as well as related secondary sources.
Findings:
The research findings show that in Marcel’s philosophy, these three concepts are deeply intertwined:
Love: not a fleeting feeling, but a saving existential force
Apprehension: unlike destructive anxiety, it is a positive and constructive encounter with the boundaries and unknowns of existence
Presence: means being fully present in the moment, the point of connection between man and the world.
Conclusion: As a result, it can be said that Gabriel Marcel’s philosophy, by centering on these three concepts, offers a concrete solution for overcoming the spiritual crises of modern man. This research concludes that love, apprehension, and presence are the three sides of a triangle that give consistency to human existence. From Marcel’s perspective, life reaches existential fulfillment when a person can be present in the world full-time by accepting the apprehensions of existence and, through love, build a bridge to others. Therefore, these three concepts are not merely abstract categories, but practical guidance on how to live an authentic and meaningful life.
