English

Objective: Contemporary Iranian illustration over the past two decades has been the ground for extensive visual and conceptual transformations in the representation of the feminine subject; however, the manner in which feminine identity is reflected in conjunction with visual forms requires structured elucidation. The principal problem of the research is the investigation of how individual and feminine identity is represented in the illustrations of Atiyyah Markazi and the transformation of its visual significations in conjunction with the contemporary cultural context. The research question is: How do the visual elements in Markazi’s works represent individual and feminine identity on the basis of a multilayered semiotic structure, and what trajectory has this representation traversed over the past two decades? The objective of this research is to elucidate the semiotic pattern of the representation of women’s individual and social identity in the works of Atiyyah Markazi and to identify the visual components constitutive of feminine subjecthood.
Method: The research method is qualitative, based on a descriptive-analytical approach, relying upon a multilayered semiotic framework. The statistical population of the research comprises all the illustrative works of Atiyyah Markazi from 2001 to 2021, from among which eleven exemplary works across three temporal periods were selected through purposive sampling.
Results: The findings indicate that feminine identity in the works of the first period is linked with traditional motifs and caregiving roles, and in the second period, with the entry of modern urban elements, undergoes conflict and a liminal position. In the third period, the illustrator, through visual concision and a change in the direction of the woman’s gaze, attains individual agency and identity independence from a subordinate position.
Conclusions: The conclusion indicates the transition of the representation of woman from a passive object to a conscious and autonomous subject in the history of contemporary illustration. This transition demonstrates that contemporary Iranian illustration, particularly in the works of Atiyyah Markazi, possesses the capacity to redefine feminine identity in relation to cultural and social transformations and can be attended to as a ground for the critical rereading of gender identity in contemporary Iranian art.
