New Right Criminology is one of the most influential schools of thought in contemporary criminology. By emphasizing individual responsibility, social control, and the intensification of penal responses, it has significantly influenced the criminal policies of many countries. This study aims to examine the influence of New Right criminological thought on contemporary criminal policy and to analyze its principal manifestations. The research was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method.
The findings indicate that New Right criminological thought, through its emphasis on public security and a firm response to crime, has reinforced punitive approaches to criminal policy. Penal populism, shaped by public opinion and the media representation of crime, has contributed to the expansion of criminalization, the intensification of punishments, and the increased use of penal interventions.penal purposes and has distanced criminal policy from evidence-based criminological principles. Furthermore, the Three Strikes doctrine and the criminology of the included and the excluded, by emphasizing the incapacitation and social exclusion of high-risk offenders, have reinforced control-oriented and security-driven criminal policies. The findings also demonstrate that the predominance of populist and security-oriented approaches may undermine the individualization of penal responses and the objectives of offender reintegration.
