Epistemological Foundations of Religious Understanding in the Thought of Ayatollah Javadi Amoli: Reconstructing the Relationship between Reason, the Quran, and the Sunnah

Abstract
Objective: To elucidate the possibility and mechanism of achieving a valid and relatively stable understanding of religion within the thought of Ayatollah Javadi Amoli, focusing on responding to challenges posed by relativistic theories and contemporary hermeneutic readings that regard religious knowledge as merely historical and subject to the interpreter’s subjective horizon. In this regard, the study aims to re-examine the relationship between the "stability of the text" and the "evolution of understanding" to provide an epistemological and realistic model.
Method: This research employs a "descriptive-analytical" approach, drawing upon the study and analysis of Ayatollah Javadi Amoli’s written works to reconstruct his system of religious knowledge across three levels: the "possibility of stable understanding," the "status of sources (Reason, Quran, and Sunnah)," and the "interaction between Reason and Revelation (Aql and Naql)." Furthermore, it attempts to evaluate the internal coherence of this intellectual macro-project in facing emergent doubts by extracting his inferential rules.
Results: In this school of thought, understanding religion is a "graded" (tashkiki), methodical process based on the interaction between valid Reason and valid Revelation. Within this framework, Reason serves not only a "key-like" (miftahi) role but also possesses "lamp-like" (misbahi) and "evaluative" (mi’yari) functions; when it yields certainty (yaqin), it attains a foundational source status in the geometry of religious knowledge. Additionally, the Quran is recognized as an "independent authority" and the ultimate criterion for assessing other sources, while the Sunnah plays an explanatory and complementary role in the light of the Quran and Reason. The outcome of this synergy is the attainment of disciplined knowledge that prevents the personalization of understanding and replaces modern subjectivism with "Revelatory Rationality."
Conclusion: By providing a problem-oriented formulation of the theory of religious understanding in Javadi Amoli’s thought, this research demonstrates that this model possesses a high capacity to transcend the deadlocks of relativism. It avoids both epistemological stagnation and lack of discipline, resting instead on a precise balance between revelatory sources and rational demonstrations. Consequently, the aforementioned theory can serve as an efficient platform for constructive dialogue between Islamic heritage and the intellectual needs of the contemporary world.
