Irony means humor, mockery, and showing the contradictory aspects of a text or work, which often causes laughter. Irony is also used as a visual technique in the narrative or form of a visual work. In this article, irony is examined in three paintings of the Shiraz school of painting, and in particular, the Al-Inju period, because it is believed that the social conditions of the Mongol rule caused Iranian artists to express concepts in illustrations and book layouts in an ironic and ironic manner. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to introduce the components and applications of irony, and the other is to qualitatively analyze irony in the content and form of three paintings from the illustrated Shahnamehs of the Al-Inju period, including "Zahhak being tied up by Fereydun", "The Death of Keykhosro's Four Sympathizers", and "Sudabeh's Accusation of Siavash". The research material is derived from library data and is based on a descriptive-analytical method. The findings of the study show that images are more likely to be analyzed ironically when the main subject is faced with profound and absolute conditions such as death or a difficult situation that leads to death. In all the images studied, there was an element of taste and structural irony and situational irony were used in them.
